Park Chan Wook’s Demanding Directing Style

Known for his meticulous filmmaking, Park Chan Wook doesn’t make things easy for his cast. Actor Lee Byung Hun shared candidly:
“He sometimes gives five or six instructions at once. By the time you’re in front of the camera, it feels overwhelming.”

Son Ye Jin echoed the sentiment, admitting that she also struggled at times with Park’s detailed notes, particularly regarding intonation and delivery. Despite the challenges, she praised her co-star, saying:
“Watching Lee Byung Hun act made me realize he is truly one of the world’s best actors. His expression set the entire tone of our film.”

Son Ye Jin’s Hesitant But Triumphant Comeback

For Son Ye Jin, No Other Choice marks her first major film project since marriage and motherhood. She revealed that when she first received the script, she hesitated. However, encouragement from close friend Lee Min Jung and the knowledge that Lee Byung Hun had signed onto the project gave her the confidence to move forward.

“Even though my role turned out to be smaller than I expected, I felt reassured knowing I’d be working with such an incredible team,” she explained.

Director Park Chan Wook also shared that he revised the script multiple times to ensure Son Ye Jin’s role carried meaningful weight. “I didn’t want her friends to ask why she chose the project. It was important to me that her character felt essential to the story,” he said.

Reflections on Early Careers

The cast also looked back on their early careers in theater and television. Lee Byung Hun recalled his first auditions at KBS, admitting that his stiff delivery once caused people to laugh at him. His story drew warm laughter from the cast and highlighted just how far he has come as one of Korea’s most respected actors today.

Balancing Stardom and Motherhood

When the conversation shifted to travel, Son Ye Jin spoke honestly about how her life has changed since becoming a mother.
“I’ve always loved traveling. After finishing a project, I would usually go on a trip. But after having children, it’s much harder now,” she confessed with a smile.
